How To Make A Great Impression In A Virtual Interview

Since the pandemic video interviews (such as Microsoft Teams, Skype and Zoom) are becoming a more popular
way to have first interview. It has multiple benefits of not having to take whole days off work or travelling but still
getting to meet the team and getting to understand the role a bit better.

Here are some tips we’ve put together to help you make a great impression in a virtual interview:

Finding the Right Environment

  • You want somewhere with few distractions and good lighting (you want to make sure the interviewer can see you!).
  • Making sure you leave your phone outside and turning off notifications is key and letting anybody who might be around that you are in an interview to limit the potential disruptions.

But don’t worry! If something unexpected happens, just explain, and carry on – it won’t be the first time the interviewer will have seen it.

Practice Using the Software

  • Try setting up a practise call with a friend/family member (or even yourself on another device) to make sure your video and sound work. You do not want to be caught out unprepared and not working when it comes to the interview.

Wear Something Professional

  • Just because the interview is online at your home, you don’t want to look scruffy.
  • Wear what you would wear to an in-person interview, as it is just as important to set high standards.

Have Everything You Need at Quick Access

  • Make sure you have a copy of your CV and any documents which you may have been asked to bring to hand, and a list of prepared questions to ask the interviewer.

Stay Engaged

  • Make sure you remove distractions from the room you are in, focus solely on the interview.
